Excavated, prepared, poured and finished by the one crew

Concrete Driveways

A driveway is the largest piece of concrete on most properties, it carries the heaviest loads, and it is the first thing anyone sees. It is also the job where cutting corners shows up soonest — usually within two or three winters.

We build driveways the long way round: dig to depth, compact a proper base, set the boxing to line and fall, place the steel on chairs, then pour and finish. The excavation and the cartage are ours, so nothing waits on another contractor.

How we do it

Depth and base

The dig goes deep enough to take the base plus the slab. A compacted crushed rock base is what stops movement — more driveways fail from what is underneath than from the concrete itself.

Thickness to suit

Slab thickness is set by what the driveway actually has to carry. A standard car driveway and one that takes a caravan or a loaded trailer are specified differently.

Reinforcement

Steel is specified to the job and the ground conditions, and it sits on chairs within the slab rather than lying on the base. That is what controls cracking and carries load.

Falls and joints

The surface falls away from the house to a legal discharge point, and control joints are cut so shrinkage cracks along a line you barely notice.

Questions

It depends on area, access, how much excavation is involved, the thickness the job calls for and the finish. Plain premix is the cheapest per square metre; exposed aggregate, coloured and polished concrete cost more. A rate quoted over the phone without seeing the site is a guess — we measure, then price, and the quote is itemised so you can compare it properly.

Thick enough for what goes on it. We set the thickness and the reinforcement against the loads and the ground conditions on your site, and both are stated on your quote.

Concrete needs time to gain strength before it takes a vehicle, and how long depends on the pour, the weather and what you are driving onto it. We give you the dates in writing when we finish, for the car and for anything heavier.

Yes. Breaking out and carting away the old slab is part of what we do, and it is on the quote as its own line.

It can, and it is the sensible way to do it. We build crossovers to council specification and can manage the permit for you as an additional item, so the driveway and the crossover are one job rather than two.

Concrete shrinks as it cures, so hairline cracking is normal in every slab ever poured. Control joints are cut so it happens along a straight line. What is not normal is a structural crack from a poor base or the wrong reinforcement.

Where the job calls for it, yes — sealing is available and quoted with the work. We will tell you whether your surface actually needs it rather than selling it by default.
